A new exhibition in Abu Dhabi is offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore the evolution of Emirati women’s fashion and jewellery, blending tradition, creativity, and cultural storytelling.
Threads of Heritage is open to the public until May 3, 2025, at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi on Reem Island. The exhibition, which is free to attend, showcases the transformation of women’s fashion in the UAE — from the early 20th century to present-day interpretations — through garments, jewellery, poetry, and personal stories.
Curated by textile expert Dr. Christophe Moulherat, Threads of Heritage is part of the UAE’s Year of Community 2025 and highlights the important connection between fashion and cultural identity.
A Journey Through Generations
The exhibition presents a thoughtful look at how Emirati women’s clothing and jewellery have developed over the decades. Visitors can explore:
- Traditional and modern garments, displayed across different time periods
- Intricate jewellery, reflecting heritage and craftsmanship
- Historical records, including travel diaries, poems, and personal accounts
- A special section on the 1970s, highlighting a key era in the UAE’s social and cultural landscape
Each piece reflects a blend of style and meaning, offering insight into how fashion has been used as both a form of self-expression and a symbol of heritage.

A Celebration of Community and Culture
Threads of Heritage not only displays fashion but also aims to strengthen cultural understanding and appreciation within the community. It invites visitors of all backgrounds — students, creatives, historians, and anyone interested in the region’s cultural journey — to engage with the stories behind the designs.
Whether you’re passionate about fashion, interested in Gulf history, or simply looking for a meaningful cultural experience in Abu Dhabi, this exhibition offers a unique and accessible way to connect with Emirati heritage.
